Guest registration

Guest registration is the registration of a guest staying in an Austrian accommodation business in the guest register under the Registration Act 1991.

Kurz erklärt

A guest staying in an accommodation business must register without delay and, in any event, within 24 hours after arrival. The guest must provide the required identity and address details and confirm their accuracy by signing. Foreign guests must also provide information from their travel document.

The accommodation business operator or an authorised representative keeps the guest register. It records the statutory data as well as the dates of arrival and departure, and the records must be retained for seven years. Section 5(3) of the Registration Act 1991 contains special rules for family groups and groups of at least eight guests. Guest registration is distinct from the general reporting obligation.

Guest registration and provincial local accommodation tax are separate areas of obligation. Any additional duties for an accommodation business depend on the rules applicable in the relevant Austrian province.
